Tax
collections in Iringa Region has increased considerably in 2013/14
financial year to Sh35.63 billion from the previous record of Sh29.04
billion in 2012/2013 financial year, being a 22.7 percent increase.
Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Iringa Regional Manager, Rosalia Mwenda told The Guardian on Sunday on Friday during the 8th taxpayers’ day celebrations in the Region that during the same period, the number of taxpayers’ also increased to 17,411 from 15,622.
On his part, the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA), Iringa Regional Chairperson, Lucas Mwakabungu said that there were complaints from the business community regarding a number of taxes being imposed by the tax body.
Mwakabungu said traders are faced with too much taxes from different other authorities, thus making their business to operate in hardships and lead them not to effectively competitive in the trade.
He said much of the profits garnered from their business were being used to pay such taxes as income tax and tariffs tax, income levy that is paid annually to TRA, the town council’s tax, municipalities and cities council’s tax.
Others agencies that impose tax on them include; Surface and Marine Transportation Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA), Tanzania Food and Drug Authority, (TFDA), Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA), Energy and Water Utility Regulatory Authority (EWURA) and the Fire and Rescue department.
The ceremony was witnessed by Iringa District Commissioner, Dr. Leticia Warioba who represented the Regional Commissioner; Amina Masenza awarded Sao Hill Forest Project as an overall taxpayer firm.
Other companies that received certificates based on three consecutive years performance from 2011 to 2014 include ASAS Transporters Co. Ltd, M.T Huwel Transporter and Ruaha University College (RUCo).
