Tanzania’s former Permanent Representative to the
United Nations (UN), Dr Augustine Mahiga, who recently declared his interest to
contest for the country’s top post through the ruling CCM, saying among the
things he expects to do when he become the president is to fight
corruption in the country.
Dr Mahiga, a long time high profile Tanzanian said that
country needs to go forward and fight corruption which said it’s the major
problem that hindering economic development.
He made the statement on Monday in Iringa region where he
came to seek for endorsement from the party members so that he can be nominated
by his party central committee (CC) and National executive committee (NEC) and
run for presidency during the forthcoming general election.
He said corruption is a cross cutting issue and one of the
major cause of all problems that the
country is facing at the moment because it affect people in all walks of life
including peace and youth employment.
He said the unity the country has been enjoying all along was
built on the basis of one party, adding that under the present setting of a
multiparty system, some broader reforms were needed to give every party and
individuals space and more governance.
Dr Mahiga said the present generation should realize
that it has the responsibility of passing over these pillars of unity – such as
patriotism, discipline, accountability and integrity to the coming generation
for the perpetual continuity of the nation.
On the issue of education, Dr Mahiga said there is need to
improve our education system by providing not just education but quality
education provided to all citizens.
He said people should not only talk about education in terms
of number of schools built but the quality of education provided in those
schools.
