IRINGA-World Wide Fund for Nature Tanzania (WWF-TCO) through its Energy program under the Renewable Energy (RE) project has started implementing a Renewable Energy Project at Chamndindi Village in Iringa District of Iringa Region.

WWF Tanzania Renewable Energy Officer, Phillipina Shayo said the project intension is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for communities in Chamndindi Village at large, hence improvement in energy efficiency.

This was disclosed on Thursday during the district platform workshop on Renewable Energy (RE) which was organized by Tanzania Grassroots Oriented Development (TAGRODE).

She said, just like 'Mabilioni' village in Same District of Kilimanjaro Region, Chamndindi Village and its residents suffer effects of prolonged drought, this is why the village was chosen to be a “Renewable Energy Model Village”.

Chamndindi Model Renewable Energy Village (CMREV) project is implemented by Tanzania Grassroots Oriented Development (TAGRODE) based in Iringa Region.

TAGRODE Executive Director, Zubery Mwachulla said that the aim of project was to conserve and protect the environment through related techniques and activities which consequently improve the living standards of the rural communities.

Mwachulla said in order to ensure sustainable access to modern energy services for the poor and marginalized communities they have conducted a baseline study to assess the existing Renewable Energy Technologies in Chamndindi Village.

He also explained that the project’s focuses mainly on improving energy access, increasing the population income, boosting the availability of biomass energy, clean-safe water and gain environmental knowledge at large.

He said that the project has conducted a baseline study to establish the current situation on Renewable Energy (RE) and that activity was a result of Thursday’s workshop.

He further stated that environmental destruction and an overuse of firewood and kerosene at Chamndini Village and Iringa District at large forced them to create awareness on the need of clean energies.

TAGRGODE has engaged various stakeholders in the implementation of this project namely, WWF- TCO, Iringa District Council, Chamndindi Community and Private Companies (Solar dealers & Biogas Construction Companies).

“Together with WWF Tanzania we will re-construct the existing Chamndindi village and neighboring ones to show different ways of producing sustainable energy from today,” emphasized Mwachulla.

Chamndindi Village is 50 kilometers from Iringa Town with at least 568 households and with a total of 2,971 residents will benefit from this project. It has some few acres of reserved natural forests and some animals like cattle, goat and pigs.

However, The World Wide for Nature (WWF) through the Tanzania Grassroots Oriented Development (TAGRODE) has contributed a solar power panel worth Sh74 million to Mwanzo Mgumu dispensary in Kisarawe District Coast Region, a project for improving services at the dispensary including modernizing the labour ward and maternal health last year.

WWF – TCO is implementing Energy Program for three years (2014- 2016) to address the key barriers to implement sustainable energy programs in the Country through empowering CSOs to raise their voice.

The program is being implemented in line with WWF- Regional Office for Africa (ROA)’s aspirations on sustainable energy in the region.
