CHUNYA DISTRICT PLANS TO COLLECT 35.9 BILLION SHILLINGS

Councilors and village leaders of Chunya district in the newly established Region of Songwe, have been asked to manage and protect the forest laws in order to reduce the problem of invasion of the important natural resources committed by some unscrupulous people.

The statement was made by Chunya District Commissioner (DC), Elias Tarimo, last week during the session of the House of Councilors of the Council which said that it is impossible to look at the forest invaders destroy the forest at the point of endangering its existence when leaders sit back and relax.

DC has instructed councilors and other leaders of village to guard the forest, adding that the protection should start in their places before the invaders can be captured by the district administration.

He said that people responsible for checkpoints should take effective measures to prevent those forest products without legal documents not to pass, and failing to do that responsible persons should be expelled and disciplinary action should be followed.

"It is very disappointing to see deforestation at large extent while councilors and village leaders are there and they pretend not to see what is going on in their areas. It is very unfortunately to see District officials are coming to arrest offenders in your area, I urge you to be the custodians of the forest and expect that these crimes stop, "Said Tarimo.

He called on the people of the district, especially those in rural areas to support the Government in reporting on the crimes of the forest in order to control them because when forests are destroyed it’s you who were going to feel the impact. 

The Chairperson of the Chunya District Council, Bosco Mwanginde said that with approved budget of the domestic revenues if collected effectively and prevent the theft of forest products, it will increase more revenue.

He said there has been a character of harvesting wood and passed through the night by theft which denies council revenues.

Adding that councilors should help raise revenue for the council by moving around all areas of forests and collect revenues from those with permits to yield forest products and those without them (permits) should be arrested and taken for legal action.

Reciting the budget proposals in the council session
of councilors, District Executive Director, Sophia Kumbuli, said that the budget has been proposed with the aim of lifting the district.

Kumbuli said in the budget that have been suggested shillings 35.9 billion, they were going spend 24.4 billion shillings on salaries, 7.8 billion shillings on development projects and 3.6 billion shillings for other expenses.

She said the 1.1 billion will be for the development of the district and village level, district agriculture plan 179 million, the water program (RWSSP) amounting to 899.9 million, the education development plan 566.3 million and other such projects.
