TANCOAL Reforests Mbinga District



MBINGA: TANZANIA Coal Mining Company Limited (TANCOAL) is organized to preserve the environment which was destroyed due to the coal mining activities at Ngaka Coal Mine, Mbinga District in Ruvuma region, the Guardian has revealed.

The energy company has so far established a nursery of trees for planting in villages and institutions surrounding the Coal Mine to compensate the lost trees.

The Environmental Officer of TANCOAL, Joseph Robert on behalf of Environment and Safety Manager Eng. Felix Dida made the statement during the Tree Planting exercise held recently in villages and public institutions surrounding the mine at Ruanda Ward in Ngaka area of Mbinga District, Ruvuma Region.

Robert said that the exercise was done good faith to compensate for the cut down trees as results of coal mining, adding that an estimation of 300 trees loss a year.

He said so far they have planted trees in the villages of Paradiso, Camp, Ruanda, Mkeso Amani, Makolo and Ntunduaro.

“In order to win the hearts of conservation for children, we have also planted some trees at Komboa, Amani Makolo, Paradio, Ruanda, Ntunduaro primary schools including Ruanda Secondary and Makolo, Paradiso dispensaries,” he said.

On his part, TANCOAL Engineer Izack Mamboleo said the company has taken initial steps towards reforestation in the areas surrounding the mine which has high reserves of coal that can be mined for over 100 years.

And that for the time being they have prepared a nursery of ten thousand trees seedlings.

Commenting on the exercise of planting trees, the acting Environmental Officer for Mbinga District, Joseph Mlibi has hailed those measures and said it should be sustainable through tree planting and caring for trees planted.

Some residents of Ntunduaro Village led by their Village Chairperson, John Nyimbo applauded those steps and said trees planted at the clinic will provide shades and has considerable benefits economically, because there is also wood and fruits trees.

Ngaka Coal Mine is a TANCOAL’s flagship project, located in the vast coalfields of South Western Tanzania in the Ngaka Basin with the potential to host up to one billion tons of high quality thermal coal.

This means, Ngaka Coal Mine reserves can serve the country for more than 100 years producing 300KW of electricity and others for commercial needs within and outside the country.
