TEACHERS LIVE IN ONE HOUSE DUE TO LACK OF HOUSES

MBARALI: Nyakadete Primary School in village Nyakadete Madibira Ward Mbarali District, Mbeya Region is facing a shortage of teachers' houses and leading some teachers to live in the homes of the families of the other teachers, it has been learned.

The Guardian recently visited the school and learns that there are only three (3) teachers’ houses when there is a need nine houses (9).

Some teachers live in the family house of another teacher that is a teacher as part of the family of another teacher.

The situation also force teachers to live 12 kilometers from school, for example, the head-teacher comes from the nearby village located in Madibira Ward, Mbarali district of Mbeya Region.

Meshack Saleh is head teacher at Nyakadete Primary School, confirmed the presence of the situation, and said that there are some teachers who live in the family of another teacher due to the shortage of school teachers’ houses.

The Guardian also noted that the school has also shortage of classrooms and lack of clean and safe water due to a water well which has broken-down for a long time.

Given the situation of lack of water, the students spent a lot of time searching for water from streets and leading to lack of time to study.

"Scholars do not have time to games because they spend a lot of time looking for water and time-consuming for pupils," said Saleh.

He mentioned other challenges that are lack of water which has contributed to make female children have a difficult time, particularly during their monthly periods (bleeding).

He said a lot of infrastructure problems which affect more girls, stem from the challenges of the budget system of the education sector, it comes to improving school infrastructure should be more attention to raising money for the development budget.

The school suffers from a lack of teaching materials for the subject of Information Communication Technology (ICT) such as computers and forcing the teacher of the subject drawing on the blackboard during the lesson.

"Lesson ICT is an important subject in primary and secondary schools considering this time of Science and technology to meet the needs of the modern world, especially in our country," said the headmaster.

He said that ICT has remained only in theory, because many teachers who teach this subject have no teaching materials on the subject and lead to a misunderstanding of what is going on in class scholars.

"This subject remains difficult to memorize vocabulary of this profession so that the student can answer the questions put forward to her/him in preparing the test and not to use this profession in her/his life now and then.," Stressed the head teacher.

Nyakadete Primary School started on 06.29.2004 and has more than 250 pupils, and since then it has by seven (7) head teachers passed through since its inception.

In another, the budget of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Training tabled on Saturday has omitted stakeholders’ wishes to see the welfare of teachers working in public schools improved.

For years now, there has been teachers’ outcry for the government to address their grievances, including outstanding arrears, housing and a good working environment.

The ministry’s budget has tabled in the Parliament on Saturday for the year 2017/2018. In this year’s budget, the ministry has asked for trillion 1.36 shillings down from trillion 1.39 shillings which was allocated to the ministry in the year 2016/2017 financial year.
