Deputy Minister For Works Warns People Of Road Signs Vandalism

MUFUNDI: THE Deputy Minister for Works in the Ministry of Transport and Communication, Elias Kwandikwa (MP) said Traffic sign vandalism is a serious concern, since it can lead to an increase in unsafe driving behaviors. 

He said Vandalism and theft of signs or other devices result in increased maintenance costs and can even expose local agencies to liability if an.

Kwandikwa has called on the people and road users to utilize the road properly to ensure that they maintain road infrastructure to reduce routine maintenance.

He made the statement in the Iringa yesterday as he was inspecting part of Mafinga-Igawa which is under rehabilitation and upgrading to bitumen standard which is part of TANZAM Highway financed by World Bank (WB) through International Development Association (IDA).

He stressed that the importance of maintaining the road infrastructure will help the long runs and reduces complaints to the people and some leaders fail to carry out developmental activities under the pretext of bad roads.

Regarding the Mafinga-Igawa road, Kwandikwa has asked the contractor to ensure that the construction is carried out based on the quality standards set out in accordance with his contract.

However, for the contractual purpose the project is divided into two lots, namely, Lot-1: Mafinga-Nyigo (74.1 km) and Lot-2: Nyigo-Igawa (63.8km).

For his part, Iringa Regional Manager TANROADS, Engineer Daniel Kindole, assured the Deputy Minister for Works that the government of the region had planned to cooperate with the contractor so that the road could be completed within the scheduled time.

Engineer Kindole said the agency (TANROADS) would oversee the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to ensure that they completed the construction at a time after the problem of water problem was addressed due heavy rains.

He said the Mafinga-Igawa road section was part of the TANZAM Highway which connects the Dar es Salaam Port with neighbouring land locked countries of Zambia and Malawi.

Eng. Kindole said the road is major transit to passengers and goods for Iringa, Mbeya and Ruvuma regions


The project is financed by World Bank through the international development association (IDA) under southern Africa trade and transport facilitation project (SATTFP). 

The civil works contract for Lot-1 was awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and contract agreement was signed on 13th march, 2015.
