The government has been urged to support the school business clubs program even after the program of entrepreneurship and financial literacy program fixed in public schools have come to an end.

The call was made yesterday the Fundación Paraguaya Tanzania Project Manager Laina Mwandoloma during the program closing and dissemination workshop held in Iringa town.

She said that they have been implementing school business clubs where students learnt by doing and engage in saving and small enterprise development.

Mwandoloma said the program is working in partnership with secondary schools and technical schools to develop school–based businesses that contribute to students learning and school self-sufficiency.

“The students should be ready and prepare them before they enter into world job markets by giving them in entrepreneurship and financial skills,” she said.

She noted that the school based business approach was good because it imparts knowledge of entrepreneurship and financial literacy in students so that when they were out of school they can employ themselves, hence reduction of youth unemployment in the country.

She said that during the project implementation of last two years youth valued learning by doing, and put it into action by starting micro-enterprises and serving; making clay pots, weaving baskets and mats, batik, soaps and earrings, bites selling, and vegetable gardens.

Mwandoloma also pointed out that the school business clubs had seen improvement in confidence levels in the way students see and value themselves, envision their futures and set goals for themselves.

On her part, the guest of honour the Acting Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Edina Byemerwa from education department on behalf of Wamoja Ayubu, said the government was read to take up the program.

She also thanked the Paraguay Foundation (PF) for implementing the school business clubs in public secondary schools in the program was aimed at giving entrepreneurship and financial skills to students.

On other hand, School Business Clubs `Coordinator Revocatus Kashaga said the research findings have revealed that youth valued learning by doing and put it into action by starting micro enterprises.

He said that the program can also be implemented in public secondary schools and students have gained financial skills and ran some businesses themselves.

Kashaga said the business club program is a financial entrepreneurial education program for youth, aimed at providing students with hand-on business experience by setting up small scale enterprises through the methodology known as ‘Learning by doing, earning and saving’.

He said that the program focuses on financial literacy and entrepreneurship to deliver programs that equip youth with practical, hand-on business experience.

“The program has managed to set up business clubs in various secondary schools in Iringa region though the Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) in collaboration United Kingdom agency for international development (UKAID),” he said.

The Fundación Paraguaya in Tanzania is implementing ‘Learn, Earn and Save’ a MasterCard Foundation Youth Livelihoods initiative which was established in 2011 to confront this challenge.

Husina Hamis Ally is a student from Kiwere secondary school in Iringa District, Iringa region whose her school has also the business club said the program has enhanced confidence, recognition in the community, and improved financial and economic status.

In addition, she said programs should address structural constraints that youth face, such as; gender-segregated workforce, lack of access to capital (money, tools, space and land); and need for ongoing mentorship. By Friday Simbaya, Iringa
