Girls Counselled Not To Serve Two Masters At A Time




THE Form Six girls’ school leavers in various secondary schools were encouraged to focus on academic studies but avoid making love affairs when they join the higher learning institutions. 


This was commented yesterday by Iringa District Council Executive Director Robert Masunya while he was opening girls’ symposium, which completed form six students awaiting attending education at various universities should make sure they go studies not making love affairs with male counterparts.

He told the girls at conference held at Ifunda Girls Secondary in Iringa District of Iringa Region yesterday not to misuse opportunities from donors (Camfed) by reminding them that there are many girls who need such a chance but don’t get it. 

Masunya, who was an official guest, said that it would be better for them to pursue lessons and to avoid combining lessons and love as they would lose their lives in the future and eventually fail to fulfill their dreams. 

He said girls should not get involved in doing things that are not worth and argued them to plan for their future life and choosing to focus on studies but to stop jumping around with other things.. 

"... Do not go to universities to copy your colleagues' notes, the university is a contract to learn in a classroom and studies should not mean to impress the donor but spend your time well," he said.


On his part, Campaign for Female Education (Camfed) Iringa District Program Coordinator, Marcus Nyagawa, said the purpose of the conference was to unite girls together, guide them on how to apply for a loans from Students Loans Board to university and as while as coaching them through university life. 

He said the conference has brought together more than 152 girls from various public schools in Iringa district, who were sponsored by Camfed international non-governmental organization and graduated from advance level of education (form six) who are waiting to go for higher education in various universities in the country. 

Nyagawa said Camfed tackles poverty and inequality by supporting marginalized girls to go to school and succeeding, and empowering young women to step up as leaders of change. 

"Educating girls is the best investment we can make to alleviate poverty and create a safe world. It has an incredible multiplier effect, providing returns for generations, “he pointed out. 

Nyagawa said that the selection of girls for bursary support is carried out through an extensive assessment at the school and community level. 

The selection includes home visits to meet with girls and their parents or guardians, adding that the selection process brings to the specific challenges each girl may face, so that the appropriate support can be coordinated. 

He elaborated that Camfed provides child protection training to school and community networks, helping them to raise standards for safeguarding the rights and welfare of children. By Friday Simbaya, Iringa
