EMPOWER WOMEN IN ORDER TO IMPROVE FAMILY INCOME

Once family income has improved among vulnerable women will improve the well being of their families as such there will be better access to essential needs like food, shelter, health which ultimately will contribute to an improvement of childcare and protection. 

Speaking to the Guardian yesterday, SOS Children’s Villages Tanzania Acting Mufindi District Program Coordinator through Women Empowerment and Child rights project, Victor Mwaipungu said that they have decided to empower women so that they are not left behind towards national industrialization policy strategy. 

SOS Children’s Villages Tanzania in collaboration with Mufindi District, Iringa region has empowered 250 women in the course of entrepreneurship and business which has facilitated women to establish economic groups. 

He said the target group is women from 19 villages that are working with SOS Children’s Villages Tanzania, who will be empowered economically so that they are able to identify and utilize the available resources and opportunities within their villages. 

The SOS Children’s Villages Tanzania in Mufindi District is working in 19 villages where they are imparting basic skills on parenting through the women empowerment and child rights project. 


Mwaipungu noted that the training was conducted in five venues including Isalavanu, Bumilayinga, Ihowanza, Sadani and Idunda respectively. 

He said that women are involved in various economic generating activities (IGAs), like petty business, poultry and agribusiness. 

“The women economic groups will offer different opportunities on identification and utilization of available resources including petty business, IGAs, VICOBA, Village and saving and lending Associations (VSLAs), soft loans, adding value to local products and resource mobilization,” Mwaipungu stated. 

The organization is working with women in the project villages by building capacity on basic skills on parenting because they taking care of 800 children. 

Mwaipungu said it is the moral duty of the parents, guardians and the community to take care of the children to provide food, shelter, education, clothing and medical care, hence promotion child protection. 

Women in various villages of Mufindi District in Iringa Region have expressed gratitude towards the SOS Children’s Villages Tanzania for supporting them in entrepreneurship and business skills. 

They said that apart from entrepreneurship skills, the international organization has also imparted knowledge to them on the matters of parenting, so that they can be in a position of providing basic needs to children including education and health. 

One of the beneficiaries, Tumaini Chalamila of Uyela Village at Ikweha Ward in Mufindi District said through the training on entrepreneurship, she will able to set up some business so that she support children to have education and health needs. 

She said the training will help her to stand up as a woman with courage by not depending on her husband for empowerment but to stand on her feet in doing some economic generating activities, hence poverty alleviation.
