Government Pays Tribute as Cardinal Pengo Is Laid to Rest

The Vice-President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, represented President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan at the funeral of retired Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, the late Polycarp Pengo.

The funeral Mass was held at the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes – Pugu in Dar es Salaam, attended by religious leaders, government officials and members of the public who gathered to pay their last respects.

Delivering the government’s condolence message after the Mass, Dr Nchimbi said the Government values Cardinal Pengo’s patriotism and his significant contribution to the nation’s spiritual and social development. He noted that the late Cardinal dedicated himself not only to Catholics but to all Tanzanians, regardless of their faith.

He described Cardinal Pengo as a principled and upright leader who consistently emphasised the importance of living according to God’s commandments and respecting the laws of the country. According to the Vice-President, the values he taught and practised throughout his life should serve as a model for every Tanzanian.

Dr Nchimbi added that the late Cardinal will be remembered for his commitment to community development, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, water services and support for people with special needs. He urged citizens to honour his legacy by upholding integrity and abiding by the law.

He also called upon religious leaders to continue praying for the nation and its leaders so that they may faithfully carry out their responsibilities.

Cardinal Pengo was laid to rest at the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes – Pugu in Dar es Salaam, with both the Government and the Catholic Church describing him as a leader who left a lasting mark on the country’s history.

MUCE IMPLEMENTS SH18.6 BILLION PROJECT IN HONOUR OF FATHER OF THE NATION’S VISION
